· TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) – Heavy weight but reliable

eg. WWW (Apache TCP port 80), e-mail (SMTP TCP port 25 Postfix MTA), File Transfer Protocol (FTP port 21) and Secure Shell (OpenSSH port 22) etc.

· UDP (User Datagram Protocol ) – Lightweight but unreliable

eg. Domain Name System (DNS UDP port 53), streaming media applications such as IPTV or movies, Voice over IP (VoIP), Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) and online multiplayer games etc

Every port has 16 bit number(0 to 65535) and has following :

· IP address and

· Protocol

The combination of above must be unique. Eg. On a same IP ( i.e on on a given host or interface) UDP and TCP may use the same port number.

Port Binding : when an application process binds a port+Ip address+protocol to itself it is called mapping. And if someone already binded the same port then it is called the port conflict.

Internet Assigned Numbers Authority – IANA is the authority for assigning service names to port numbers. IANA maintains port number registry .In ideal world all the ports must be registered with IANA for the application they are using. Port number categorization by IANA:

· The System Ports(or Well Known Ports) : from 0-1023 (assigned by IANA)

· The User Ports(or Registered Ports) : from 1024-49151 (assigned by IANA)

· The Dynamic Ports(or Private Ports) : from 49152-65535 (never assigned)

NOPARALLEL : If object size < 400  MB
Degree 2   : If object size < 800  MB
Degree 4   : If object size < 1000 MB
Degree 8   : If object size < 2 GB
Default    : If object size > 2 GB
Points :

1. object means table and indexes both
2. DOP of table = DOP of indexes
3. If Default dop is becoming problem as more and more jobs are using a lot of parallel threads ( monitor wait event ‘PX Deq Credit: send blkd’ in awr reports) then changing default to a lower degree would also be considered.

Steps :

1. open a new file in notepad and wrte following kind of connection information :
